The independent community of Galicia is situated in the country of Spain, and besides that there is also a community by the same name which is situated in New York, which is itself a part of the United States of America. There are a number of languages which are spoken in this community, including Galician, which is known as Galego in the Galician language. |
This is the local language, and has been derived from the Latin language, and is a close relative of the Portuguese language. Both these languages can be classified as being Galician Portuguese languages. Another language which is spoken in this community is the Spanish language. This has been the official language of the community for a long period of time. The Galician language has the status of being an official language, and this status was given to the language from the ending of the twentieth century. In Galician schools both Galician as well as Spanish is taught. A lot of people are in support of the effort to conserve the Galician language.
The origin of both the Portuguese as well as the Galician language is from the Middle Ages Portuguese, which is also known as the Galego Portuguese or the early Galician Portuguese. These languages were spoken by people living in the regions located in Portugal in the north of Duoro, as well as in Galicia in Spain. A lot of people consider that these two separate languages are actually a part of one, and are just different dialects.
After the Middle Ages there appeared a Galician Literature which was very distinct. There were a lot of important contributions made to in the language of Galician Portuguese related to the romance canon. It was in this period of the language that it was believed by many that Galician Portuguese was the language of love poetry.
